Presented on this CD are the chamber works of Franz Liszt. This is certainly a decidedly minor production, quantitatively speaking, compared to the impressive corpus of compositions for solo piano; however, the compositions for Trio, about ten in total, all fit, originals and transcriptions alike, fully within Liszt’s poetic world. All the more so since the piano still constitutes a sort of common thread that orients us within this small but fascinating territory. Nor can we forget that we are still dealing with the works of the man who literally drove the audiences of his time (and still of ours) crazy, so much so that a mature Heine, and perhaps even more delightfully ironic, coined the term “lisztomania.” The program offered by an excellent Trio di Parma (and it has to be, if only to tackle certain technical difficulties) includes original works, transcriptions by Liszt himself (most of them) and a beautiful, albeit impervious transcription of the Symphonic Poem “Orpheus” by that great gentleman of transcription who was Camille Saint-Saëns. There is also no shortage of in memoriam homage to Wagner, as is well known a central figure in Liszt’s life, in that composition, The lugubrious gondola that refers to the famous piano page of the same name. Competent and timely notes by Ettore Napoli introduce the CD, recorded in natural acoustics in the enchanting setting of the Fondazione Spinola (which thus contributed to its realization) by Stefano and Francesco Cerrato.
