The first two pieces on this CD fall in Respighi’s most artistically fertile period, conventionally between ‘The Fountains of Rome’ (1916) and the ‘Misolid Concerto’ for piano and orchestra (1924): the Doric Quartet precedes the Concerto by only a year, which was presented in 1925 to great acclaim by Willem Mengelberg at Carnegie Hall with the composer himself at the piano, while the Sonata, the second after the youthful Sonata in D minor (1897), is from 1917. Completing the CD are the Six Pieces for Violin and Piano.
