This is an enchanting opera buffa that is certainly to be included in the “minor” repertoire of Donizetti’s operas, but which contains all the elements of his stylistic signature: a tender and joyful melodic vein, an exquisite sense of humor, which often borders on the pathetic, and a great sense of theater. The farce has madness as its pretext: a theme dear to 18th-century Europe and to Naples in particular. And it was precisely in Naples that it met with great success so much so that it remained on the bill for 15 years.
