Among the composers who have most closely linked their image to guitar music is surely Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, who showed an innate musical aptitude at an early age and, while still very young, managed to graduate in piano and composition under Ildebrando Pizzetti. In the 1930s Castelnuovo-Tedesco was one of the best-known and most appreciated Italian composers abroad: his works were performed by musicians of the caliber of Toscanini, Piatigorsky, Casella, Heifetz, Gieseking and Segovia; and it was precisely from his friendship with the latter that a love for the guitar was born in him, an instrument to which, in the last years of his life, he entrusted his most intimate and autobiographical pages.
