The Italian mezzo-soprano Gloria Banditelli , born in Assisi, studied singing at the Conservatory of Perugia. In 1979, she won the Concorso del TeatroSperimentale (Competition of the Experimental Theater) of Spoleto singing her presentation in the Cenerentola, and singing soon Dido and Eneas.
Gloria Banditelli, specialising in the Baroque and Rossini repertory, has sung in some of the most important Italian and European theatres, including the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, La Fenice, the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome, San Carlo in Naples, Regio in Turín, Massimo in Palermo, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Wiener Staatsoper, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, the Thé‚tre des Champs Elysées and the Thé‚tre du Chatelet in Paris, the Musikverein in Vienna and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, under the baton of such conductors as Riccardo Chailly, Renée Clemencic, Vladimir Delman, Zubin Mehta and Riccardo Muti, Claudio Abbado, Carlos Kleiber, Gavazzeni, Lorin Maazel and Gatti, among others.
In 1997 Gloria Banditelli performed, among other things, in Il turco in Italia under Riccardo Chailly at the Teatro alla Scala, in Linda di Chamounix at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, in The Legende of the Zar Sultan and in Gianni Schicchi at the Teatro Comunale in Florence. In 1998 Gloria Banditelli was heard also in Manon Lescaut at La Scala in Milan, in Il ritorno di Ulisse in Patria in Athens and in La clemenza di Tito in St. Gallen. In 1999 she was invited to the Konzerthaus in Vienna for a recital and then returned to Florence for Pergolesi's Stabat Mater and Gianni Schicchi.
Year 2000 brought her to Cagliari for Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, to the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino to portray Larina in Evgenij Onegin, to Lucca for Suor Angelica. In 2001 she has been heard in Monteverdi's Il ritorno di Ulisse in patria at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and at the Monteverdi Festival in Cremona conducted by Trevor Pinnock, in Dido and Aeneas at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome and in Monteverdi's Orfeo in Madrid with Jordi Savall and directed by Gilbert Deflo.
She has recently sung Prova d'orchestra at the Teatro dell'Opera in Roma and at the Teatro Comunale in Ferrara, and Dido and Aeneas at the Teatro Comunale Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. Among her recent performances are Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria and Dido and Eneas in Florence, and L'Orfeo, in Graz and Madrid.
Gloria Banditelli's concert activity includes Mendelssohn's Elijah (at the Società del Quartetto in Milan and at the Ravenna Festival conducted by Gianandrea Gavazzeni), Beethoven's IX Symphony at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Vivaldi's Juditha triumphans at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, as well as Bach's Magnificat (BWV 243), Hšndel's Messiah and Serse and Monteverdi's Orfeo.
She also sang chamber music for RAI, the Academy of Santa Cecilia, Chigiana Academy, Friends of the music of Perugia, Padova and Palermo and Musical September of Turin. Highlights of Gloria Banditelli's future engagements include Rossini's Petite messe solennelle in Stuttgart, Giulio Cesare at the Opéra of Montecarlo and Farnace at the Teatro Nacional la Zarzuela in Madrid. In previous seasons Gloria Banditelli has been heard in Gluck's Alceste (Ismene), Davide Penitente by Mozart, as Larina in Evgenij Onegin at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, in Fetonte by Jommelli, in I vespri Siciliani at the Teatro alla Scala with Riccardo Muti, as Fidalma in Il matrimonio segreto, as Tisbe in La cenerentola in Florence and Bologna with Riccardo Chailly and on tour in Japan, as Marcellina in Le nozze di Figaro with Riccardo Muti at the Wiener Staatsoper, in Nozze di Teti e Peleo at the Rossini Opera Festival di Pesaro, as Penelope in Il ritorno di Ulisse in patria at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, in Lucrezia Borgia at the Festival Donizetti di Bergamo, as Ottavia in L'incoronazione di Poppea, and in L'occasione fa il ladro at La Scala and in Rome. For season 2002, she is planned to sing L'Orfeo Teatro del Liceo of Barcelona.
Gloria Banditelli has recorded for Radio France, for the Westdeutsche Rundfunk, for Austrian and Dutch Radio, for the Swiss Television, and on RAI. She can be heard on Fonit-Cetra, Harmonia Mundi, Hungaroton, Denon, Frequenz, Nuova Era, Tactus, and Bongiovanni records.
