Biography of Antonio Fantinuoli

Antonio Fantinuoli gained his diploma in the performance of early music on the cello, with a particular focus on basso continuo playing. antonio-fantinuoli His musical journey began at a young age as a singer in the church choir of his home town, Campomorone, in the Genoese region, where the director of the time was Flavio Dellepiane. It was this excellent organist and composer who introduced Fantinuoli to performance on period instruments. He initially began playing the baroque oboe in the '70s learning much of the great baroque repertoire for choir and orchestra in his double role as cantor and oboist. He began playing cello later, in 1982, and learned very quickly under the guidance of Maestro Marco Guidarini. He met violinist Fabio Biondi in 1988 and together they were selected to be part of the Hesperion XX ensemble directed by Jordi Savall. In 1989 they founded the Europe Galante and from 2010 he assumed the role of principal cellist. Since 1989 he has performed in hundreds of concerts all over the world and made dozens of recordings including: Brandenburg Concertos, Bach Orchestral Suites, the Seven Last Words of Christ by Haydn, the film score for Toutes les matines du Monde with Jordi Savall; all of the recordings of Europa Galante; some critically acclaimed disks of sonatas for violin and basso continuo, Vivaldi Op. 2, Mascitti and Dall'Abaco Op. 1. He is the principal cellist of the Academy of Research directed by Pietro Busca and the Piedmont ensemble, since last year he has also started playing the viola da gamba for the renaissance part of the Academy, thereby expanding its instrumental capabilities. He teaches cello to children using the Suzuki method in Genoa at the Conservatory of Vicenza and in the near future will be teaching a course in bass accompaniment and baroque cello. He is also a good self-taught acoustic guitarist using the fingerstyle technique.
