Ascanio Maione was born in Naples around 1570 and is thought to have been born into a Jewish family who moved to the capital of Campania following the Spanish expulsion of 1492 (Majone or Mayone would come from Jewish surname Maymon). He was a composer, harpist and organist at the Church of the Annunciation where he studied and worked later at the Royal Chapel where Trabaci was already working. He was considered an excellent composer and organist by his contemporaries. In some of his compositions, his style anticipates the Baroque period. He published two books of Caprices for harp and keyboard as well as various editions of madrigals and sacred music.
